Be loud during sex!

Once for a change pay no attention to the people around you and make as loud sounds as you want. Express your enjoyment and pleasure!

Why should you be quiet?

Many people hold back their real pleasure and don’t relax completely. There are various reasons: maybe a strict upbringing by their parents or the fact that they got used to having sex when their parents were at home and had to do it quietly to prevent anyone from hearing them, or they may feel unpleasant because of the sounds made during sexual intercourse, or the reason may be an unpleasant memory of porn movies where the loudest screams made by women were fake and thus stupid. Don’t understand this in a wrong way. We don’t mean that you have to scream at the top of your lungs to break all the windows and give a headache to your neighbour. You don’t need to pretend to make moaning sound in order to please your partner. All we’re saying is that you don’t need to be quiet because by doing that you hold back your pleasure and can’t totally relax during sexual intercourse. Why would you feel embarrassed to enjoy it? There’s no need for that, especially as far as your partner is concerned, who’ll definitely like it if you make moaning sounds because of the things he does to you. It’s the same for both men and women. It’s true that usually women are louder and make various sounds of pleasure, but men shouldn’t hold themselves back. They also have to show how much they enjoy sex and try to relax. This will be a positive thing for a man, while his partner will enjoy listening how much he enjoys her touches.

Where’s the limit?

If you saw the cult erotic comedy Porky’s, then you certainly haven’t forgotten the scene where the leading actress, Kim Cattrall – the Kim Cattrall playing Samantha in the Sex and the City series – makes loud moaning sounds. As she’s truly loud, her school friends make fun of her and plant her a young man that has sexual intercourse with her at school. Everything can be heard through the speakers and, naturally, everyone bursts out laughing. It’s true that the woman played by Kim Cattrall is really loud, perhaps even too loud, especially since she’s in a public place, school, where there’s a strong chance that she might be heard by someone. However, if you feel like making really loud moaning sounds, we advise you to choose a slightly more secluded place to have sexual intercourse. Well, unless you don’t care if anyone hears you. If that’s the case, just do it and be as loud as you want. The worst thing that can happen to you are the envious looks of your neighbours. On the other hand, it’s much better that the screams of pleasure are heard from your apartment as opposed to a loud quarrel. This is also perfectly illustrated in the movie Jungle Fever, made by Spike Lee in the early 1990s. In the movie, a boy listens to his parents having sex every morning and it makes him happy that they still love each other. When the moaning sounds stop because his father’s affair, the boy is no longer happy because he realises that something is wrong. Where’s therefore the limit? In our opinion, there’s no limit, meaning that you shouldn’t hold yourself back. If you feel like screaming during your orgasm, just scream. If it makes you feel good to be loud during oral sex, just make the loud sounds. If you rather sigh, do that. Everyone has his or her own preference. Our advice is that anything is better than being quiet, embarrassed and careful not to produce a slightest sound of pleasure.

Can you also talk?

Moaning sounds are often associated with talking. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course. We encourage you to talk and advise you to do it as much as you want. Naturally, you don’t talk about things that have no connection with sex, but things that will additionally arouse you. Describe your partner’s genitals, praise his or her body, talk about what you’re doing, what you intend to do and how do you want to do it. Well, you don’t need to exaggarate, since sex is like a conversation in a pub. You have to find the right combination of talking and moaning and you’ll hit the nail on the head. It’s also positive to say: “I love you”. Before, during and after sex, of course. What if one of the partners likes to talk, but that bothers the other one? What if one of the partners very much likes to make loud moaning sounds, but that disturbs the other one and he or she can’t focus on sex? Or in other words, what if one of the partners wants to hear the other moan, but the other partner can’t give him or her that? Unfortunately, we don’t have a general recipe. We recommend that you’re patient and don’t press your partner into anything. Try to adjust slowly and achieve your goals in a diplomatic and cunning way.

Fish oil boosts memory function by 15%

Including oily fish like salmon and trout in one’s diet can significantly improve memory by almost 15 percent and help prevent the onset of dementia, a new study has found.

Welma Stonehouse and her team from the Massey University in New Zealand gave supplements containing DHA, an Omega-3 fatty acid found in foods such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, trout, prawns and mussels, to 176 healthy adults over a period of six months.

During this time memory and cognitive function were assessed and compared to a placebo group.

After treatment, memory, working memory and speed of working memory all showed significant improvements.

It is believed that DHA could be key in preventing Alzheimer’s disease, one of the most common forms of dementia, characterised by a decline in mental abilities, such as memory and reasoning and often associated with increasing age.

“This is the first robust study to show that a DHA-rich supplement can improve some aspects of memory functioning in young healthy adults,” the Daily Mail quoted Stonehouse as saying.

“The cognitive functions shown to be affected by the DHA-rich fish oil, namely memory and working memory, are among the most important functions of our brains for numerous everyday activities, such as working, driving, shopping, studying, playing sports, etc.

“Maintaining brain health and getting your brain to perform at its optimal capacity is just as vital as maintaining physical wellbeing and health,” she said.

DHA, is one of the most highly concentrated fats in the brain and known to play a vital role in the structure and functioning of the brain, but as the body cannot effectively make this fatty acid it must be consumed as part of the diet.

The researchers also highlighted that as many people fail to eat enough fish and seafood, the brain’s performance is potentially compromised.

The study showed that male participants who took a DHA supplement demonstrated 15 percent faster working memory while women had a seven percent improvement in the speed of episodic memory.

“These findings contribute to the growing body of research showing that omega-3’s play a very important role in brain function throughout the life cycle, even in healthy cognitively intact individuals,” she added.

Four anti-cancer compounds identified

Four new anti-cancer compounds have shown promise in inhibiting the growth of tumours, according to a new approach.

Jason Smith, doing his M.Phil. in biomolecular sciences from Macquarie University, combined existing knowledge of an enzyme with computational chemistry approach to identify novel (cancer) inhibitors.

The enzyme (indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase) has generated excitement amongst researchers due to its increasingly recognised role as a drug target, particularly in cancer.

Over the past 10 years, scientists have learnt that compounds inhibiting this enzyme allow the immune system to attack cancer cells, the journal Bio-organic and Medicinal Chemistry reported.

"They have found that if you use these inhibitors alone, they slow tumour growth. Even more exciting is that in combination with chemotherapy, these inhibitors have the potential to destroy a tumour entirely," explains Smith, a university statement said.

After conducting virtual screening of a database of almost 60,000 compounds, Smith found 18 compounds that could potentially act as inhibitors of this enzyme.

He then tested them and found four compounds with particularly exciting prospects.

"Computational chemistry means we don`t have to spend years testing thousands of compounds in the lab," he said.

"We can analyse all the potential compounds and narrow them down in a matter of six month`s preparation and virtual screening, instead of years. In fact, after all the preparation and groundwork, the screening itself takes around 100 hours," he further added.

3-D printer used `to make bone-like material`

An Indian-origin researcher -led team has created a bone-like material and structure using a 3-D printer, which it claims can well be used in orthopaedic procedures, dental work, and to deliver osteoporosis medicine.

Susmita Bose and colleagues at Washington State University says that paired with actual bone, the material acts as a scaffold for new bone to grow on and ultimately dissolves with no apparent ill-effects.

The researchers say they`re already seeing promising results with in-vivo tests on rats and rabbits.

"It`s possible that doctors will be able to custom order replacement bone tissue in a few years. If a doctor has a CT scan of a defect, we can convert it to a CAD file and make the scaffold according to the defect," Bose said.

The material grows out of a four-year interdisciplinary effort involving chemistry, materials science, biology and manufacturing. A main finding is that the addition of silicon and zinc more than doubled the strength of the main material, calcium phosphate.

The researchers also spent a year optimising a commercially available ProMetal 3-D printer designed to make metal objects.

The printer works by having an inkjet spray a plastic binder over a bed of powder in layers of 20 microns, half the width of a human hair. Following a computer`s directions, it creates a channelled cylinder the size of a pencil eraser.

After just a week in a medium with immature human bone cells, the scaffold was supporting a network of new bone cells, revealed the findings published in the latest issue of the `Dental Materials` journal.

India to avert 3 million HIV cases: World Bank

India is expected to avert 3 million new HIV infections during the period 1995-2015 by using targeted interventions among vulnerable groups, according to a World Bank study released Wednesday.

The study, `Impact of Targeted Interventions on Heterosexual Transmission of HIV in India`, evaluated the impact of targeted interventions among female sex workers in four high prevalent states -- Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

The study found a significant decline in HIV prevalence among female sex workers and young women (15-24 years) seeking antenatal care in the high-prevalence southern states.

The drop in prevalence is associated with a significant increase in consistent condom use.

"Among the women seeking antenatal care in districts with high intensity of targeted interventions, HIV prevalence declined by more than 50 percent from 1.9 percent in 2001 to 0.8 percent in 2008, compared with low-intensity districts where the infection rate remained constant at 0.9 percent in both 2001 and 2008," it said.

The study shows the cost-effectiveness of these targeted HIV-prevention interventions for female sex workers and estimates that 3 million HIV infections will be averted by this strategic approach during 1995-2015.

"There has been a tremendous scale-up of prevention and treatment interventions under this program, which has led to an overall reduction in new infections and AIDS-related deaths in India," said Sayan Chatterjee, secretary and director general of National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO).

Since the launch of the NACO in 1991, India has worked in close partnership with the World Bank and other development partners to focus on prevention among vulnerable populations at highest risk of contracting HIV.

"AIDS remains a critical development issue that is reversing decades of human progress. With 34 million people living with HIV, AIDS continues to decimate communities, stymie economic growth, and orphan children," said David Wilson, the Bank`s global HIV/AIDS programme director.

The first HIV positive case in India was detected in 1986 in Tamil Nadu. Now there are around 2.5 million HIV-positive people nationwide.

Four cups of coffee can prevent womb cancer?

Women, please note - drinking four cups of coffee a day could help you keep womb cancer at bay, a new study has claimed. esearchers at Harvard School of Public Health have found a link between regular consumption of coffee and lower risk of developing endometrial cancer, the most common form of
the disease.

Women who drank four or more cups a day over many years were 25 per cent less likely to develop the disease than those who limited themselves to less than a cup daily, the 26-year study of almost 70,000 women found.

CoffeeBoth caffeinated and decaffeinated varieties seemed to help ward off the disease, although tea had no effect, the 'Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention' journal said. Drunk regularly, coffee may help lower levels of hormones believed to fuel the cancer, say the researchers.

They said: "Increasing exercise and maintaining normal body weight are the most important ways to prevent endometrial cancer. However, additional strategies are needed and dietary habits such as coffee drinking could provide one option."

However, the researchers cautioned that adding cream and sugar to the beverage may cancel out the effects, as may smoking, the 'Daily Mail' reported.

A total of 672 cases of the cancer, which affects the lining of the uterus, were reported in the study.

Lead researcher Edward Giovannucci said coffee could help against cancers associated with obesity, insulin and oestrogen, and it was shown to improve insulin resistance.

He said: "Coffee has already been shown to be protective against diabetes due to its effect on insulin, so we hypothesised that we'd see a reduction in some cancers as well. Laboratory testing has found that coffee has much more antioxidants than most vegetables and fruits."

Using wi-fi on a laptop 'damages sperm'

Here's an advice for the tech-savvy generation -- browsing the net on a laptop computer connected with wireless technology can damage sperm counts, a new study has claimed. An international team has discovered that a laptop, using wi-fi, which is placed near male reproductive organs
reduced men's sperm quality and also their chances of experiencing fatherhood, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The study, led by the Nascentis Centre for Reproductive Medicine in Cordoba, Argentina and Eastern Virginia Medical School, found a quarter of the sperm placed next to a laptop for just a few hours were killed.

Evidence of DNA damage was also found. In comparison, sperm that was stored at the same temperature but away from a laptop showed a smaller drop in mobility and a significant reduction in DNA damage.

Meanwhile, semen placed under the computer without the wi-fi connected did not experience significant levels of sperm damage, according to the study.

"Our data suggest that the use of a laptop computer wirelessly connected to the internet and positioned near the male reproductive organs may decrease human sperm quality," said Dr Conrado Avendano, who led the study.

"At present we do not know whether this effect is induced by all laptop computers connected by wi-fi to the internet or what use conditions heighten this effect," he added.

In the latest study, researchers took sperm specimens from 29 healthy men, aged 26 to 45. Each donor sample was separated out into two pots and either placed under a laptop using wireless technology or away from the computer.

The researchers then used the laptop to download information from the internet for four hours. They found that 25% of the sperm under the laptop had stopped moving and nine per cent showed DNA damage.

By comparison, just 14% of samples kept away from the wi-fi stopped moving while just three per cent suffered DNA damage.

Dr Avendano stressed the results did not necessarily mean the same would occur in a real-life setting, adding that men should not unduly worry. But he recommended more research be undertaken.

Depression doubles heart disease risk

Depressed people have double the chances of suffering from heart disease compared to people who are not depressed, a new study has suggested.

A new study led by Concordia University has found that depressed individuals have a slower recovery time after exercise in contrast to those who do not suffer from mood disorders.

These findings suggest that a dysfunctional biological stress system is at play among depressed individuals.

“There have been two competing theories as to why depression is linked to cardiovascular disease,” says first author Jennifer Gordon.

“Depressed people may have poorer health behaviours, which may in turn lead to heart problems. The other possibility is physiological: a problem with the stress system known as the fight or flight response.”

“Our study was the first to examine the role of a dysfunctional fight or flight response in depression in a large population.”

A total of 886 participants, who were on an average 60 years old, took part in the study.

Approximately 5 per cent of participants were diagnosed with a major depressive disorder. All individuals were asked to undergo a stress test after which their heart rate and blood pressure were recorded.

Recovery heart rates and blood pressure levels were compared between depressed and non-depressed individuals.

“We found that it took longer for the heart rate of depressed individuals to return to normal,” said senior author, Simon Bacon, a professor in the Concordia University Department of Exercise Science and a researcher at the Montreal Heart Institute.

“Heart rate recovery from exercise is one way to measure the fight or flight stress response. The delayed ability to establish a normal heart rate in the depressed individuals indicates a dysfunctional stress response.

“We believe that this dysfunction, can contribute to their increased risk for heart disease,” Bacon added.

The study has been published in the journal Psychophysiology.

6. Possess antibacterial and anti fungal properties

Eating low-cal diet `can cure diabetes`

Here`s some good news for people suffering from Type 2 diabetes -- eating a low-calorie diet everyday for just four months could cure the disease, a new study has revealed.

A team at Leiden University in the Netherlands says its findings may revolutionise the treatment of the lifelong condition with no cure, and caused by pancreas not producing enough insulin to break down glucose in the blood.

In their study, researchers found that diabetics who slashed the calories they ate each day actually had a far more significant improvement in the condition and in their general health than medication offered.

They no longer needed life-saving insulin, the level of dangerous fat built up around their hearts was significantly reduced and their cardiac function improved.

"It is striking to see how a relatively simple intervention of a very low-calorie diet effectively cures Type 2 diabetes. Moreover, the effects are long term, illustrating the potential of this method.

"Lifestyle interventions may have more powerful beneficial cardiac effects than medication in these patients," a newspaper quoted the study`s lead author Sebastiaan Hammer as saying.

The discovery has major implications as diabetics and the obese are particularly at risk of suffering a potentially fatal heart attack or being struck down by debilitating heart disease, say the researchers.

In their study, the researchers wanted to discover long- term effects of weight loss by restricting calorie intake.

Pericardial fat is a build-up around the heart that can stop it from working properly, particularly in the obese and sufferers from metabolic disease seen as a precursor to heart disease.

Dr Hammer said: "Our results show that 16 weeks of caloric restriction improved heart function in these patients. More importantly, despite regain of weight, these beneficial cardiovascular effects were persistent over the long term."

Using scans, the researchers analysed heart function and pericardial fat in 15 patients -- seven men and eight women -- with Type 2 diabetes before and after four months of a diet consisting of 500 calories a day.

Changes in body mass index (BMI) were also measured. The results showed that caloric restriction reduced BMI from 35.3 to 27.5 over four months. Pericardial fat also decreased by about a third and resting heart function improved noticeably.

And, after an additional 14 months of follow-up on a regular diet, BMI increased to 31.7, but pericardial fat only increased slightly. On average, someone who has a BMI of 30 will get diabetes.

Experts have welcomed the findings.

Dr Lorna Layward, a spokeswoman for the Stroke Association said: "Diabetes, being overweight and poor heart function can all increase our risk of stroke. Losing weight is something that everybody can do something about and it can have a huge impact on improving our overall health.

Laptop Wi-Fi said to nuke sperm, but caveats abound

The digital age has left men`s nether parts in a squeeze, if you believe the latest science on semen, laptops and wireless connections.

In a report in the venerable medical journal Fertility and Sterility, Argentinian scientists describe how they got semen samples from 29 healthy men, placed a few drops under a laptop connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi and then hit download.

Four hours later, the semen was, eh, well-done.

A quarter of the sperm were no longer swimming around, for instance, compared to just 14 percent from semen samples stored at the same temperature away from the computer.

And nine percent of the sperm showed DNA damage, three-fold more than the comparison samples.

The culprit? Electromagnetic radiation generated during wireless communication, say Conrado Avendano of Nascentis Medicina Reproductiva in Cordoba and colleagues.
"Our data suggest that the use of a laptop computer wirelessly connected to the internet and positioned near the male reproductive organs may decrease human sperm quality," they write in their report.

"At present we do not know whether this effect is induced by all laptop computers connected by Wi-Fi to the internet or what use conditions heighten this effect."

A separate test with a laptop that was on, but not wirelessly connected, found negligible EM radiation from the machine alone.

The findings fuel concerns raised by a few other research teams.

Some have found that radiation from cell phones creates feeble sperm in the lab, for example. And last year urologists described how a man`s sitting with a laptop balanced on his knees can crank up the temperature of his scrotum to levels that aren`t good for sperm.

So between the heat and the radiation from today`s electronic devices, testicles would seem to be hard-pressed.

But that is not at all clear, said Dr. Robert Oates, who has managed to father two kids despite having both a laptop and an iPad.

The president of the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology, Oates said he doesn`t believe laptops are a significant threat to male reproductive health.

"This is not real-life biology, this is a completely artificial setting," he said about the new study. "It is scientifically interesting, but to me it doesn`t have any human biological relevance."

He added that so far, no study has ever looked at whether laptop use has any influence on fertility or pregnancy outcomes.

"Suddenly all of this angst is created for real-life actual persons that doesn`t have to be," said Oates, also of Boston Medical Center.

According to the American Urological Association, nearly one in six couples in the US have trouble conceiving a baby, and about half the time the man is at the root of the problem.

While the impact of modern technology is still murky, lifestyle does matter, researchers say.

Earlier this month, a report in Fertility and Sterility showed that men who eat a diet rich in fruit and grains and low in red meat, alcohol and coffee have a better shot at getting their partner pregnant during fertility treatment.

"You should be keeping yourself healthy," including staying lean, eating healthy foods, exercising, not taking drugs and not smoking, agreed Oates.

And for those laptop worries, he mused, "I don`t know how many people use laptops on their laps anyway."

Breakthrough in fight against malaria ?

An international team of scientists has announced a breakthrough in the fight against malaria, paving the way for the development of new drugs to treat the deadly disease.

According to the World Health Organisation malaria currently infects more than 225 million people worldwide and accounts for nearly 800,000 deaths per year.

Most deaths occur among children living in Africa where a child dies every 45 seconds of malaria and the disease accounts for approximately 20 per cent of all childhood deaths.

The disease is caused by the malaria parasite, Plasmodium that is injected into the human host through the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito.

Now researchers have discovered new ways in which the malarial parasite survives in the bloodstream of its victims, a release from the University of Leicester said.

The advance is the result of collaboration between medical scientists at the University of Leicester in the UK and a team from the French Institute National de la Sant et de
la Recherche Medicale (Inserm) working at the Welcome Trust Centre for Molecular Parasitology in Glasgow and the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland), now relocating to Monash University in Melbourne (Australia).

The breakthrough was made by the teams led by Professor Andrew Tobin at the University of Leicester and Professor Christian Doerig, now at Monash University, and is published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature Communications, the release said.
Professor Tobin, of the Department of Cell Physiology and Pharmacology, said: "I am proud to be involved in a collaboration that has made such an impact on malaria research. PTI PS "Our study opens new avenues for researchers to look for new drugs that treat malaria."

Professor Doerig explained: "We have shown that a crucial element that is required by malaria parasites to survive in the human blood stream is a group of enzymes called protein kinases.

If we stop these proteins kinases from working then we kill the malaria parasites.
We are now looking for drugs that do exactly that – stop the protein kinases from working.

If we find these drugs then we will have a new way of killing the malaria parasite."
Tobin added: "It seems perfectly realistic to us that we can now develop novel anti-malaria drugs based on the findings that we have made - it certainly is a big moment in our fight against this terrible disease that mainly affects the world`s poorest people."

However, the experts warned that the "parasite is very clever" at adapting to drug treatments and in so doing becoming resistant to drugs.

In fact, there is already evidence that the parasite is developing resistance to the most recent front line treatment for malaria, they said.

Dating a Man with Cancer

The process of dating is a sensitive one and requires a lot of give and take on both sides. To take your relationship to another level, both partners need to be considerate and patient. This understanding takes on a whole new meaning when you are dating a man with cancer. More than a lover, a cancer patient needs a friend who has coherence and common sense.

Dating someone suffering from cancer can be very trying but if you truly care for your man, you can enjoy several moments of togetherness. You have to keep a few things in mind though:

  • Don’t press him for commitment: When he is not sure about his life, how can he make promises for a future with you? As of now, he needs your love and friendship without any expectation for returns. You have to stand beside him and battle his war along with him.
  • Help him enjoy normal life: It is natural for him to slip into a ‘nothing matters anymore’ mode. You, as his support, have to make him see the beauty of ordinary life and help him steer clear of drugs and drinking.
  • Try and bear his anger: Understand his anger. He is angry with his body and with fate for striking him with a rough hand. Try and understand his terror. He wants to be normal but has no surety. This makes dating a man with cancer extremely unpredictable. He will have mood swings but you have to help him get past the anger to an acceptance stage.
  • Make him enjoy each day: Once he has accepted his disease, he will be willing to enjoy each day as one more day to call his own. Help him have faith in his treatment and plan things that are fun for both of you.
  • Keep a check on your emotions: If you give-in to catharsis, things can turn out pretty messy. Of course, it’s not easy to be dating a man with cancer, but since it’s a choice you’ve made, you need to be strong. He is already battling a lot; do not overburden him with your emotional baggage as well.
  • Let him be as independent as he can: People with cancer often seek a platform to assert their independence. They don’t want to lose control completely and shy away from being overcared. Understand and watch over him from a distance.

A lot of understanding and consideration goes into a relationship. Dating a man with cancer can be very demanding and is bound to leave you emotionally drained. Nevertheless, keeping the love you have for your man in mind, you can help him fight this disease and be the support he so desperately requires.

Worried about rare sexual intercourse - is it normal?

Many people wonder whether they have intercourse too seldom or too often. Here is the answer.

There`s nothing wrong with having rare sexual intercourse.

What is a normal frequency?

The usual dose is twice or three times a week, but many people have intercourse more often. Some stick to a rather consistent schedule – others like more intense weekends after pauses. If you make love less than twice a week, this shows that you can get more out of the situation, unless you know from your experience that having intercourse less frequently is optimal for you.

Classic orgasm doesn’t promise frequent intercourse

People who often have coital orgasm usually decide to have fewer climaxes than those who mix coitus with oral, manual and other kinds of intercourse that increase the number of climaxes achieved by most men.

You have to find your own combination, dependent on your responsiveness: if either of the partners needs more, you can satisfy his/her needs with additional techniques and coordinate them with yours. Frequency declines with age, but there is no age at which you can’t be taken by surprise at a special occasion. Therefore, don’t worry about frequency (and don’t worry if your friends say they have intercourse more often than you).

It is normal to have intercourse less and less often?

Sexual intercourse doesn’t mean collecting points. You have to be aware that there will be moments when you or your partner simply won’t be in the mood for sexual intercourse – because you’re tired, working overtime, etc. – thus, don’t force other people or yourself to follow a schedule. Just think about what exactly you want. It’s advisable to follow your feelings.

The loop is as follows: most people know well (either they read about it or follow their intuition) that sexual desire fluctuates and declines with age in most cases. That’s why it’s good to know that attractiveness can’t be constantly upgraded and maintained. The chemical processes at the physical level largely determine frequency of sexual intercourse. You can do a lot by being aware of it, thus investing more in a relationship every year and stirring up the sexual desire of you and your partner.

Diet rich in fruits, grains can boost male fertility

Men who eat plenty of fruits and grains but cut down on their red meat and alcohol intake have higher chances of a successful in-vitro fertilisation, a new study has suggested.

The study revealed that a poor diet and obesity can lower sperm concentration and affect their ability to swim towards an egg.

In the past, female fertility problems have been linked to obesity as well as smoking and drinking, but it was not clear until now if the same applies to men as well.

The latest study of men with partners, who were undergoing a type of fertility treatment, has revealed that those who regularly binged on alcohol and ate poorly were slowed down on the fertility front, the Daily Mail reported.

“The sperm concentration was negatively influenced by body mass index (BMI) and alcohol consumption, and was positively influenced by cereal consumption and the number of meals per day,” lead researcher Edson Borges, from the Fertility-Assisted Fertilization Center in Sao Paolo said.

The Brazilian study involved 250 men with partners who were undergoing a type of fertility treatment called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

Each participant was asked how often they ate a range of foods, including fruits and vegetables, beans, grains, meat and fish, as well as how much they drank and smoked.

Semen samples were then examined to assess sperm health and concentration and each couple were monitored during the IVF process.

The study revealed that eggs were successfully fertilised in about three-quarters of the treatments, but just fewer than forty per cent of women got pregnant.

From the speed of their sperm to their partner’s chance of pregnancy, men who drank and had a poor diet were less fertile.

The results have been published in the Fertility and Sterility journal.

Why meditation is good for brain

Yale researchers have found that meditation appears to help brain switch off areas associated with daydreaming as well as psychiatric disorders such as autism and schizophrenia.

Meditation’s ability to help people stay focused on the moment has been associated with increased happiness levels, said Judson A. Brewer, assistant professor of psychiatry and lead author of the study.

Understanding how meditation works will aid investigation into a host of diseases, he said.

The Yale team conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging scans on both experienced and novice meditators as they practiced three different meditation techniques.

They found that experienced meditators had decreased activity in areas of the brain called the default mode network, which has been implicated in lapses of attention and disorders such as anxiety, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and even the build-up of beta amyloid plaques in Alzheimer’s disease.

The scans also showed that when the default mode network was active, brain regions associated with self-monitoring and cognitive control were co-activated in experienced meditators but not novices.

This may indicate that meditators are constantly monitoring and suppressing the emergence of “me” thoughts, or mind wandering. In pathological forms, these states are associated with diseases such as autism and schizophrenia.

The meditators did this both during meditation, and also when just resting — not being told to do anything in particular.

This may indicate that meditators have developed a “new” default mode in which there is more present-cantered awareness, and less “self”-cantered, say the researchers.

The study has been published early this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Scienc

Brain cell research sheds light on autism

Scientists have identified potential differences in brain cells of people with a rare syndrome linked to autism, a finding they say could explain the origins of the condition and lead to targeted treatment.

Researchers at the Stanford University in the US used a method to turn skin cells from people with "Timothy syndrome" -- who often display autistic behaviours -- into brain cells.

They found abnormal activities in these cells which were, however, corrected partially using an experimental drug.

This means, the researchers said, the findings present a useful target for scientists looking to examine what goes wrong in the developing brain of a child with autism, the BBC reported.

Compared with the millions of people worldwide thought to show characteristics of autism, Timothy syndrome is very rare and it affects an estimated 20 people across the globe.

For the study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, the researchers used a newly-developed technique to generate brain cells called neurons from only a sample of the patient`s skin. This allowed them to examine their development in the laboratory, and even use them to test out possible treatments.

They found obvious differences between neurons grown from Timothy syndrome patients, and those from healthy "controls".

The healthy neurons developed into different subtypes, ready for work in different regions of the brain, while it was very different in the Timothy syndrome samples -- more were equipped to work in the upper part of the cerebral cortex, and fewer in the lower part.

This meant there were fewer neurons equipped to work in a part of the brain called the corpus callosum, which helps the left and right "hemispheres" of the brain communicate. These differences echoed those already observed in mice specially bred with the Timothy syndrome genetic fault.

In addition, the neurons were making too much of a particular body chemical linked to the manufacture of dopamine and norepinephrine, which play a significant role in sensory processing and social behaviour.

Dr Ricardo Dolmetsch, who led the study, said that the abnormalities found tallied with other evidence that autism was due in part to poor communication between different parts of the brain.

The team managed to reduce significantly the number of these malfunctioning neurons by adding a drug they developed.

This, they said, meant it might be possible one day to treat this defect in a real patient, although the drug used was not currently suitable for children due to side-effects.

The National Autistic Society in UK, however, gave a cautious welcome to findings, and warned that they did not necessarily offer insights into every form of autism.

Researcher Georgina Gomez said: "Timothy syndrome is only one form of autism and so these findings only give a very limited picture of what might cause the condition.

Canned soup ups BPA levels 1200% in urine

Consuming canned soups instead of fresh ones raises bisphenol A (BPA) concentrations in urine, a new study has suggested.

The study conducted by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) found that a group of volunteers who consumed a serving of canned soup each day for five days had a more than 1,000 percent increase in urinary bisphenol A (BPA) concentrations compared with when the same individuals consumed fresh soup daily for five days.

“Previous studies have linked elevated BPA levels with adverse health effects. The next step was to figure out how people are getting exposed to BPA,” said Jenny Carwile, lead author of the study.

“We’ve known for a while that drinking beverages that have been stored in certain hard plastics can increase the amount of BPA in your body.”

“This study suggests that canned foods may be an even greater concern, especially given their wide use.”

Exposure to the endocrine-disrupting chemical BPA, used in the lining of metal food and beverage cans, has been linked with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity in humans.

The researchers, led by Carwile and Karin Michels, associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology, set out to quantify whether canned-soup consumption would increase urinary BPA concentrations relative to eating fresh soup.
They recruited student and staff volunteers from HSPH. One group consumed a 12-ounce serving of vegetarian canned soup each day for five days; another group consumed 12 ounces of vegetarian fresh soup (prepared without canned ingredients) daily for five days. After a two-day "washout" period, the groups reversed their assignments.

Urine samples of the 75 volunteers taken during the testing showed that consumption of a serving of canned soup daily was associated with a 1,221 percent increase in BPA compared to levels in urine collected after consumption of fresh soup.

“The magnitude of the rise in urinary BPA we observed after just one serving of soup was unexpected and may be of concern among individuals who regularly consume foods from cans or drink several canned beverages daily.”

“It may be advisable for manufacturers to consider eliminating BPA from can linings,” said Michels.

The study has been published in the Journal of the Medical Association (JAMA).

Bone marrow cancer genes `identified`

In what`s being hailed as a major breakthrough, scientists claim to have identified genes that can raise a person`s risk of developing multiple myeloma, an aggressive form of bone marrow cancer, by nearly 30 per cent.

It was already known that relatives of those suffering from the incurable cancer were at increased risk, but until now, no responsible gene had been identified.

Now, a team at the Institute of Cancer Research used a technique called a genome wide association study to scan the DNA of 1,675 patients with multiple myeloma. The same process was also carried out on around 5,900 healthy people.

When results were compared scientists discovered that two regions of the DNA that were more common in people with multiple myeloma and were therefore linked to a higher chance of developing the disease, the `Daily Mail` reported.

Prof Gareth Morgan from the ICR said the findings, are particularly important as the disease becomes more prevalent among an aging population.

"Multiple myeloma is an aggressive cancer that sadly has poor survival rates. By learning more about the biology of multiple myeloma development, we hope to identify new drug
targets -- or even existing drugs -- that could improve patient outcomes.
"Multiple myeloma is becoming more common as the population ages, and so it is even more important that we find new treatments," he said.

Myeloma, is a type of bone marrow cancer which affects plasma cells inside the bone marrow, which are an important part of the immune system. Usually it doesn`t exist as a lump or tumour and it is only when symptoms such as bone pain and fractures occur that a diagnosis is given.

Currently there`s no cure, but chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation can control its progression.

Shoes to go with your body type

A shoe is like an underpinning a woman builds her entire look on. And there is more to shoe dynamics that just colour and design — the shoe should compliment your body type.

“Buy shoes that work best with your body type. We have a tendency to match shoes to our outfits. But it is important
to be wise with our shoe spending rupees,” says Vidya Varma, fashion stylist.

Picking a shoe is a humongous task, something only women will agree with; and when you have to match a pair to your body type, it only raises the difficulty level. Hence, to help retain the pleasure in your shopping experience, here are some guidelines that will help you pick the best shoe for your body type. Follow these expert tips that will make your buy worth the effort and bucks spent.

Short women with thicker legs
“Any shoe with a simple heel will work for this kind of body structure. However, it is advisable to pick one with a unique design to catch attention. Also, shoes with open-toe design are recommended. But, boots of mid-calf design should be avoided, as well as flats, because they can have a tendency to make your legs appear thicker and your overall stature shorter” says Vidya Varma.

Slim women with long legs
Heels“Even taller women are entitled to wear heels or stilettos. However, care should be taken to ensure that it is not too high. Moreover, small calves, and mid-calf boots are also perfect as well as strappy sandals, as they can add drama to your feet. Pointed shoes should be avoided as it creates an illusion that the wearer is too tall,” says Varma.

Petite women with short legs
“Shorter women need to increase their height, so for that reason, high heels, wedges and platform type of shoes are recommended. Of course, not everyone is comfortable wearing such shoes. In those cases flat shoes can be worn but they will look best with a dress or skirt that falls above the knee to avoid looking shorter,” says Shunam Gulati, fashion stylist.

Now treat asthma without drugs

A Swedish invention may clear the air while you sleep to help asthma sufferers breath better without drugs. Garnering recent buzz in health blogs and on websites such as WebMD, The Health Age, and Health.Infoniac, the Protexo machine, produced by Swedish company Airsonett, is used during
sleep. While snoozing under the device, it delivers a flow of pure filtered air to remove common allergens that cause inflammation of the lungs, including dust mites and pet hairs.

In a UK study previously published in the journal Thorax, researcher John Warner from St Mary's Hospital and Imperial College London tested the device in a one-year study of 282 people from six European countries. Those who slept under the Protexo reported a drastic improvement in their quality of life -- and were less likely to be admitted to the hospital due to an asthma attack.

While the device has recently received European consumer safety approval, it is not yet available for private purchase but can be found in some medical facilities. At home use should cost around €2,339 for six months. This week in the UK, asthma experts are urging the National Health Service to begin leasing the device to patients.

"We're doing some further studies, looking at mechanisms, how it's affecting inflammation, how it affects quality of sleep," Warner stated.

Meanwhile, with the colder months ahead, you're likely to spend more time indoors and use your household heating system, which can allow air and particles such as pet dander, dust, and mold to recirculate through the home, providing continual exposure to allergens.

If you suffer from asthma, the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology recommends filtering out dust and other allergens by installing a high-efficiency furnace filter with a MERV rating of 11 or 12, and be sure to change it every three months.

In addition, keep your bedroom as free of allergens as possible by banishing pets and encasing mattresses and pillows with dust-mite-proof covers. Also use blinds instead of curtains.

Penis Enlargement Tips

Men often feel insecure about the size of their “manhood.” This may be a justified insecurity, but most often it is psychological.

Either way, it is very possible for a man to benefit from certain penis enlargement treatments. The following section is an overview of the various ways a man can improve his endowment.

One way that a man helps increase the length and circumference of his “manhood” is by exercising. A very common routine that a man can perform is to use his muscles to stop his urine mid-flow. He can stop and start his urine as he goes to the bathroom.

He can also use milking motions as if he is working the udders of a cow. He can work his fingers up and down in order to help stretch it moderately.

He can also use a variety of stretches and warm-ups to help him sustain his erection. All of this is done to help get him ready for sexual intercourse, and it can add to his ability to lengthen his member.

An additional method of penis enlargement is simply to take a supplement on a regular basis. Oftentimes these supplements have in them herbal ingredients such as ginseng, horny goat weed, cuscuta seed, or gingko biloba.

These substances serve a variety of functions, one of which is to help increase the length and girth of a man’s member. The other is to help provide him with aphrodisiac support so he can become aroused for erection.

Other sexually-enhancing herbs you may find in certain remedies include the following: catauba bark, Taj, Safflower, and Hawthorn berry. These as well as the ones described above are often present in extract or powder form when a man takes a supplement.

Sometimes these herbal ingredients are also found in certain other products, such as penis patches. Some men have even tried using certain topical remedies.

Sometimes a man may also use a variety of pieces of equipment and devices to enhance his endowment. For instance, a penis clamp or band placed on the base of his member can help him sustain an erection.
Conclusion
He can also use penis stretching tools to help him lengthen his organ. All of this is done to help him find as much pleasure as possible as he pleases his partner. The end result is a more satisfying sexual experience for both the man and the woman.

How to Enlarge Your Penis Easily

For men who wish to enlarge their penis questions regarding ease and safety of the method often come up. There are different methods each with its pros and cons. Penis enlargement exercises stand out as the easiest to perform and safest.
There are two main techniques employed in penis enlargement exercises, the stretch and flex.

The stretch technique involves stretching the penis shaft to enable more blood to flow into its tissue. In addition, this technique promotes cell multiplication in the shaft making it longer and thicker. Here is a simple procedure of a stretch technique called the jelq.

Bring your penis to be half erect
Apply lubricant to your hands
Firmly hold the base of the penis with your thumb and index finger
Run the fingers along the shaft towards the head ensuring blood is pushed toward head
Repeat the procedure with the other hand
Perform the technique about 30 times

The flex technique involves strengthening the pubo coccygeal (PC) muscles. This helps you to have a bigger erection as well as control over your ejaculation. Here is a flexing technique called the kegel.

Tense the PC muscles which are located between the scrotum and anus for 1 second and release
Repeat this 30 times before rest

It is easy to perform these penis enlargement exercises as you only need to master the technique. In addition, you can perform them in the bathroom before going to bed.

However, easy they might seem, these are powerful ways to increase your penis length and girth. How soon you see results will be determined by a number of factors such as your diet and the amount of rest you give you penis after exercise.

It will take you weeks or even months before seeing any results. The best part however is that the exercises will make your penis larger permanently.

Men take more time getting ready than women

On an average, men spend more time getting ready to go out as compared to their female counterparts, a new study has found.

According to the research carried out by Travelodge, men spend 81 minutes a day on personal grooming, including cleansing, toning and moisturising, shaving, styling hair and choosing clothes, the Telegraph reported.

On the other hand, women have their beauty regime down to a fine art and get their hair, clothes and make-up done in just 75 minutes.

The study also found that on an average morning, men spend 23 minutes in the shower, compared to 22 minutes for women.

Men take 18 minutes on their shaving regime, compared to 14 minutes for women despite them having to trim legs, armpits and bikini line.

As compared to women, men take a minute longer, 10 minutes, on cleansing, toning and moisturising.

Choosing an outfit is also a time-consuming operation for men who want to look their best due to which they take 13 minutes compared to 10 minutes for women.

Man-made flu virus could wipe out humanity

A group of scientists has caused a storm of controversy after creating a man-made virus that could potentially wipe out humanity if it ever escaped the laboratory where it was made.

The deadly virus is a genetically tweaked version of the H5N1 bird flu strain, but is far more infectious and could pass easily between millions of people at a time.

The current strain of H5N1 has only killed 500 people and is not contagious enough to cause a global pandemic, but there are fears that the modified virus is so dangerous it could be used for bio-warfare, if it falls into the wrong hands.

Virologist Ron Fouchier of the Erasmus Medical Centre in the Netherlands led a team of scientists who discovered that a mere five mutations to the avian virus was sufficient to make it spread far more easily.
He conducted his tests on ferrets as the animals have become a model of choice for influenza and have similar respiratory tracts to humans.

Fouchier is so prepared for a media storm that he has already hired an advisor to help him work on a communication strategy.

The research done was a part of an international drive to understand H5N1 more fully.

Fouchier admitted that the strain is “one of the most dangerous viruses you can make” but is still adamant that he wants to publish a paper describing how it was done.

The study is one of two which has caused serious debate about scientific freedom and about regulating research which might have potential public health benefits but at the same time could also be useful for bio-terrorism.

Both the papers are now being reviewed by the U.S National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB).

“I can’t think of another pathogenic organism that is as scary as this one. I don’t think anthrax is scary at all compared to this,” the Daily Mail quoted Paul Keim, chairman of NSABB as saying.

Breakthrough may pave way for new malaria drugs

Researchers have shown how the malaria parasite can survive in a type of white blood cell in the spleen -- a breakthrough that could lead to new malaria drugs and vaccines.

Traditionally, it was believed the parasite`s development was restricted to the liver and red blood cells.

Michelle Wykes, who conducted the study from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR), said the findings open up a whole new approach to developing drugs and vaccines, the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reports.

"Our research has discovered how white blood cells called dendritic cells malfunction and shield the malaria parasite from the body`s immune attack.

"Dendritic cells normally function like generals of an army, giving orders to the body`s immune cells to fight infection," QIMR quoted Wykes as saying.

"The system usually works brilliantly. However, the problem with malaria is that the disease has found a way to block dendritic cells from doing their work, meaning the disease over-rides our immune responses. (So) people get sick," said Wykes.

Anti-HIV gel trial scrapped

A large-scale clinical trial of a new vaginal gel supposed to reduce HIV infections in women has been suspended after the gel was found ineffective.

This comes as a major setback, as the previous study on the gel, spiked with the AIDS drug tenofovir had shown encouraging results. The first trial by Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), in 2010, showed reduced HIV infections in by 39% overall, but by 54% among those women who used it most consistently.

An interim review recommended that the Vaginal and Oral Interventions to Control the Epidemic (VOICE) study evaluating daily use of tenofovir vaginal gel was even less effective than a placebo. The VOICE study is divided into three experiments comparing three different products against a placebo. Part of the research has now been cancelled.

Another area of the three-part trial, involving a tenofovir pill was cancelled in September because it, too, did not appear to be working. However, the study is ongoing on a third avenue using tenofovir and a booster drug (Truvada pill).

The trial is expected to go on until mid-2012 and the data are to be released in early 2013.

British ladies carry rotten fish to sex toys in handbags!

While opening a woman`s purse could be viewed as an uncivilised conduct for a man, a survey of the British women`s handbags has revealed one can expect rotten fish to sex toys beside other essentials in them.

A quarter of the British women carry around spare garments while two percent of bags have secret sex toys in them, the Daily Mail quoted a survey as revealing.

Interestingly, most of them have no idea what else is hidden away, as 68 percent of women never empty out their handbags, says the survey of British women, conducted on behalf of online accessories retailer AnjliLondon.com.

The survey which found most of the British women carrying around the usual suspects: make-up, a mobile phone and a purse, also revealed 80 percent of the women carrying the essentials as well as keys, a hair brush, tissues, painkillers, a mirror and an umbrella.

Two percent of the women said that they carried leftover food, with one woman even admitting to have found a rotten fish at the bottom of her bag.

Twenty seven percent of the women carry hair straighteners with them at all times while four percent fill our bags with `chicken fillet` bust enhancers!

Of the 500 women queried, it was found that 68 percent never cleared out their handbag and were surprised at its content when asked to check.

They claimed the only time they tip out the contents were when they lose their keys, phone or purse or when they`ve bought a new bag!

Now, find your soulmate in just 90 days! Really!

A match making company in China has claimed that it can help any single woman find their ‘soulmate’ in just 90 days.

But the services offered by this self-styled life coach, Liang Yali comes for a price.

“We’re not a matchmaking service, we’re pioneers,” said the 41-year-old founder of Yali Marriage Quotient, which is run from an exclusive club in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area.

“We’re more like an educational institute. We offer classes that help women understand themselves better, and build their confidence so they are more outgoing.”

“Good things, including marriage, will happen once they start coming out.”

Yali also said that 60 percent of her students last year have already ‘graduated’ by tying the knot with Mr Right, China Daily reported.

The premium package, which consists of four two-day classes and tailored coaching, costs 11,800 yuan (1,900 dollars).

However, the company also offers other courses that range from two hours to three days, with the cheapest at 4,800 yuan.

“That``s very little to pay to improve your life - to meet your soul mate and start a family,” said Kenneth Davis, 52, the company``s executive director and Liang``s husband.

Dong Ning, who takes care of general inquiries for the company, said that the special love lessons are highly customized.

“First, Liang usually interviews her students, so she can understand what they are like and learn about their previous relationships,” she said.

“Students are told to attend classes at different frequencies, depending on their level. We also track their progress once they have finished the course.”

Liang asserted that the average time for ‘graduation’ is about 90 days, counting from when students start the classes to when they walk down the aisle.

She also offers a 100 percent reimbursement if the clients are unhappy.

10 facts about vagina that every woman should know

Are you sure that you know enough about your vagina and if what you know is actually true?

Vagina - every woman has it, but it is still surrounded by a veil of mystery. Still, every woman should know at least few things about it. Check them out.

The quantity of vaginal discharge depends on every woman and her monthly cycle. Some women who are completely healthy have to wear sanitary towels every day because of their heavy discharge; while some almost don`t have any discharge at all. Until the discharge is not accompanied by itching, burning pain or unpleasant smell, there`s no reason to worry.

Every vagina and every vulva is unique. Some women have large labia majora, while with others labia minora is almost as large as labia majora, but they are all unique. That`s why you should never compare yourself to airbrushed genitalia of women in porno magazines, but accept your body as it is, including your vagina and vulva.

It is difficult for most women to experience orgasm only with penetration. At least some stimulation of the clitoris is required and you should never be worried if you haven`t achieved vaginal orgasm. In most cases, vaginal orgasm is only a myth.

You have to be patient if you want to find your G-spot. G-spot is very hard to find and you shouldn`t despair if you don`t succeed. You can have a great sex life without it, too.

The decision about the surroundings of your vagina is completely personal. It is however true, that certain beauty standards exist about the appearance of the female sex organs, but that doesn`t mean you have to follow them too. You probably don`t wear everything when it comes to clothes, right?

It is not possible to become a virgin again. Or, that your hymen would grow back if you abstain from vaginal intercourse for some time. It is just a myth.

Vaginal winds are normal and they happen to every woman, especially during the sexual act itself or when doing certain exercises. Don`t be embarrassed, it`s perfectly normal.

Vagina doesn`t need vaginal douching. Vaginal douching can be even harmful, because it destroys the pH balance of the vagina, which prevents bacteria from developing.

Vaginal intercourse isn`t supposed to be painful, although many women experience it as such. If you`re one of them, visit your gynecologist, who will look for reasons behind it.

Female ejaculation is quite controversial; some say that it is possible, while others object. If you haven`t experienced it, don`t worry! It is not connected with anything that would bring you extra pleasure during intercourse

Now, a water-powered radio!

A UK based company has invented a radio that is powered by the motion of water flowing into a shower.

The H20 water-powered radio, manufactured by Tango Group, clips onto the water pipe that runs up to a shower head.

The radio uses micro turbine technology and is powered by the water pressure running up a pipe.

“The radio runs on energy generated solely through the flow of water, starting as the shower is turned on. It harnesses power that would otherwise literally go straight down the drain,” the telegraph quoted a spokesman for Tango Group as saying.

Tango hopes that the waterproof radio will enjoy the same success as the Wind-Up Radio.

The H20 was invented by Vivian Black, a former director of Freeplay Energy Group, which helped turn Trevor Baylis’s Wind-UP Radio into a commercial success in the 1990s.

“Having seen huge success with the commercialisation of the Wind-Up Radio, we were constantly looking into new ways that further innovations in the radio sector could be made,” Black said.

“Creating the now-patented micro turbine technology, that allows the radio to operate solely through the flow of water, was the key to our new innovation; and thus the world’s first water-powered shower radio was created,” he added.

Chinese medicine can double chances of conception

Couples with fertility problems are twice as likely to conceive using traditional Chinese medicine as compared to western drugs, a new study has found.

The researchers at Adelaide University, Australia, reviewed eight clinical trials, 13 other studies and case reports comparing the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with western drugs or IVF treatment.

The review, funded by the Australian government, included 1,851 women with infertility problems, and the clinical trials alone found a 3.5 rise in pregnancies over a four-month period among women using TCM compared with western medicine.

Other data covering 616 women within the review showed 50 percent of women having TCM got pregnant compared with 30 percent of those receiving IVF treatment.

The overall analysis concluded that there was a two-fold increase in the likelihood of getting pregnant in a four-month period for women using TCM as compared with orthodox approaches.

“Our meta-analysis suggests traditional Chinese herbal medicine to be more effective in the treatment of female infertility - achieving on average a 60 percent pregnancy rate over four months compared with 30 percent achieved with standard western drug treatment,” the Daily Mail quoted the study’s authors as saying.

According to the study, the difference appeared to be due to the careful analysis of the menstrual cycle, the period when it is possible for a woman to conceive, by TCM practitioners.

Poor diet ups health risks for the elderly

Millions of older people in Britain are at risk of chronic health conditions like osteoporosis, heart disease and stroke because of a bad diet, experts have warned.

According to doctors, a health time-bomb is being stored up for many who face a future blighted by a poor quality of life simply because they are not eating the right foods.

Diet is one of the most important risk factors in the development of chronic conditions and is something we can all easily change for the better.

Yet an increasing ageing population means millions are risking an old age blighted by illnesses that could be prevented if they simply maintained a healthy, balanced diet.

In an independent research carried out by Carrie Ruxton, diets of older people were analysed for nutritional content to gauge their likely health status now and in the future.

Ruxton evaluated data from 71 previously published reports, studies and trials to establish the health risks that people aged 50 or over could be facing.

According to her, while ageing was inevitable, the goal was to age healthily, with an absence of chronic disease and a slower decline in cognitive and physical function.
She found that in too many cases older people failed to get enough vital nutrients for optimal health, in particular vitamin A, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin D, folic acid, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc and iodine.

Vitamin D is vital for bone health, while research suggests it can help combat other serious illnesses including cancer.

She found that 97 percent of people aged 65 and over fail to meet the recommended vitamin intake, but more than 40 percent of that age group and 47 percent of over-75s have a long-standing illness that limits their ability to perform everyday tasks.

“Those most at risk include people in their 80s and the elderly in institutions. This has led to calls for more older people to take multi-nutrient supplements. Healthy eating advice should be combined with information on the beneficial role of dietary supplements,” the Daily Express quoted Ruxton as saying.

The study has been published in the journal Nutrition & Food Science.

Polio nearly eradicated in India: WHO

The World Health Organization has said polio is on the verge of eradication in India, but Pakistan is still struggling to counter the disease.

WHO spokesperson for the polio programme, Oliver Rosenbauer, said the virus was not detected in sewage in India, though cases surge during his time of the year.

His comments came after experts warned that if eradication fails now, it would be "the most expensive public health failure in history".

The victory against polio owes to persistent co-ordinated vaccination drives spearheaded by local officials in affected areas, and the use of a more efficient vaccine that only targets the circulating strains.
Pakistan, which registered 145 cases this year, however, continues to be a worry as polio has already spread across the country from three strongholds, Karachi, Quetta and the north-west tribal area.

Rosenbauer said the WHO would rely on local leaders to implement its new national vaccination drive in Karachi and Quetta.

Nigeria has recorded a four-fold increase in polio cases this year and the country has re-infected three neighbouring nations, which were formerly declared polio-free.

However, polio cases have decreased by 95 percent as compared to 2009, and remain only where local leaders have not taken initiative for the cause.

"Our analysis shows the extent of local leadership correlates with viral persistence," Rosenbauer said.

Afghanistan has polio cases in the south near Pakistan since Local violence prevented vaccination leading to tripling of cases this year, to 53.
