Get to know the hidden secrets of the Kama Sutra

How much do you really know about the Kama Sutra which has been agitating people for decades? Read about the hidden secrets of the Kama Sutra!

What are the secrets Kama Sutra really?

The Kama Sutra has nothing to do with pornography. It is actually a pretty boring and almost ridiculously precise catalogue on the behaviour of the sexes on all sorts of occasions. It contains chapters on the wedding, marriage, on how to act in a harem, how to make money with love and it also contains (magical) advice on increasing the libido or on improving sexuality. The Kama Sutra contains 1250 verses and 36 chapters. It is thematically broken up into seven parts. In 1883, it was translated by Burton and Arbuthnot and it acquired the status of pornographic material in Victorian England, just like any other work on sexuality until Freud wrote A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis.

The common conviction is that the book is a collection of spicy positions, but in truth, only one part (albeit the longest) from the seven focuses on erotic techniques. The Kama Sutra is also not a manual on sexual morality, but a book about different methods for different cases. Vatsyayana gives equal advice to everyone – to men on how to seduce other people’s wives and also on how to maintain the faithfulness of your wife.

The secrets of the Kama Sutra are supposedly still read by virgins

In the past, the knowledge of the Kama Sutra was transmitted from experienced women to younger women. Besides that, a woman had to be good at 64 other types of knowledge, which included several art forms, doing your makeup, architecture, carpentry, fencing, cock fighting, fortune-telling and sorcery.

The internet is to blame for the popularity of the Kama Sutra and its secrets

The Kama Sutra was translated into English by A. Daniélou and I. Sinha after Burton. The chapter on sexual positions from this last translation started circulating on the internet in the 90s and this is mostly to blame why the Kama Sutra is nowadays considered as a catalogue of exotic or even acrobatic positions.

How does the Kama Sutra understand sexuality and erotica?

Men and women enjoy in the same way, the difference in how intercourse goes stems from their mutual arrangement. During the first intercourse, the man’s passion is great and the time of intercourse short, while the situation is reversed with all the next instances of intercourse that happen that same day. Vatsyayana says that women are just the opposite.

Kama means enjoying the things that feel good to our five senses – hearing, feeling, seeing, tasting and smelling – if it is accompanied by the soul. Kama is actually that special kind of pleasure we experience if we touch the object of our desires.“ It teaches us that erotica is a long-lasting ritual and not the last act in this ritual.

The discussions about the Kama Sutra go as far back as the Vedic era, meaning the second millennium BC. Indian authors painted an atlas of the female body, erogenous zones; they described a few types of the female temperament; they defined the monthly cycle of female moods and the ups and downs of their sexual drive.

According to Kama Sutra, the mind and the body aren’t in contradiction

India is considered to be a very spiritual country, but it has the richest tradition in expert erotic literature. This is contradictory to the European belief, where the body and mind are separated. The Indians believe the mind is not separated from the body and there’s no chance of these two areas being in contradiction – the mind and the body are two ingredients of the ideal whole. The Kama is as necessary as food for our health and our well-being.
